Politicians in Val d’Europe, around 35 km to the east of Paris, near Disneyland Paris, want the region that includes the theme park to become the European destination of gaming by opening ‘four to six’ casinos.
The elected representatives of Val d’Europe want to preserve the development model of their territory for the next 20 years. To achieve this, they are working on new solutions and are trying to involve their long-standing partners, such as the EPA Public Establishment), the State and Disney.
Among these projects, one of them could attract thousands of tourists looking for entertainment in the Val d’Europe. The most obvious obstacle is the legislation. Set in 1902 a law has long been in place prohibiting the establishment of a casino within 100 kilometres of Paris. Until recently French casinos had to be located in seaside resorts or spa towns or cities more than 500,000 inhabitants but there have been exceptions.
Arnaud de Belenet, President of Val d’ Europe, said: “We want to make the Val d ‘ Europe the European destination of gaming. It’s not just a dream. Amendments have already been accepted in the past. This was the case in Bordeaux and Lyon. The question is whether the state wants this project to develop in France or in a neighbouring country. If we get an agreement quickly, there will be a call for proposals and then a call for tenders and, after two years of work. We welcome 40m tourists per year, and Val d’Europe represents 10 per cent of tourist arrivals in France. We have the first interconnection station with the Roissy airport nine minutes away. Moreover, we are candidates to host the global village of Paris Expo 2025.”
He believes that this new direction is compatible with current family tourism.
The casinos would create 5,000 jobs plus those that would be generated by the hotel industry.
Mr de Belenet highlighted the efforts to try and establish a casino destination in both Barcelona and Madrid recently and said that if Val d’Europe doesn’t seize the opportunity another European city will.
